At Langston Living, style, warmth, and creativity are in every corner. Our dog plays a huge role in making our house a home. Sippi, our 16-year-old Bichon Frise, has been part of our family since our kids were little. We got him when we had four kids under six. What were we thinking? Crazy, right? Nevertheless, he’s grown up alongside our children and added much love and joy to our lives.

Let’s look at how dogs like Sippi bring charm and inspiration to a family’s lifestyle.

Our Stylish Companions

Dogs aren’t just pets but part of our identity. Their presence adds a lived-in quality that matches the family’s style and nature. From their cozy lounging spots to their cute accessories, our furry friends fit right into the artistic vibe we’ve created.

Sippi’s favorite spot? On a blanket on top of the sofa cushions, blending perfectly with our fur throw. He’s camouflaged, considering he’s a white fluffball, just like the blanket. His being all nuzzled in adds a cozy feel to our space.

Sure, they can also damage our favorite designs, but preventative measures can mitigate the damage. Chew toys were our go-to trick to save our furniture and rugs—that is, when Sippi still had teeth. At 16, he’s now a toothless wonder.

Our ‘Walmart Greeter’ Wags His Tail

When we entertain, our dog is always in the mix. It’s important to take into consideration our Bichon’s small size and friendly nature. Sippi’s infectious energy always sets the tone for our gatherings,  adding a warmth that makes everyone feel at home.

However, this may not work for bigger dogs, an overprotective dog that views guests as a threat, or even a dog that can’t resist jumping on guests. In this case, a crate or separate room is better during a gathering.

We suggest a designated area with their favorite treats and toys to keep them away from food temptations. This way, they can have fun without any mishaps.

Unconditional Love, Everyday Inspiration

Our dogs remind us daily of the power of unconditional love. They’re our adventure buddies, sounding boards, and sources of comfort. They find joy in the simplest moments and inspire us to do the same. When accidents happen, a little patience and understanding go a long way.

Sippi has been there to snuggle after breakups, skinned knees, lost games, cold days, and the flu. Dogs find joy in the simplest moments, like a walk or a quiet evening, inspiring us to do the same.

The Importance of Play and Presence

Dogs remind us to be present. Their playful antics and eager companionship encourage us to live in the moment. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a cuddle on the couch, these moments of connection are what Langston Living is all about.

Managing Common Challenges: Raising a dog with kids is challenging but rewarding

Here are some tips we’ve learned:

  • Furniture Chewing: Quality chew toys were our go-to trick to save furniture and rugs. That is when Sippi still had teeth. At 16, he’s now a toothless wonder.
  • Accidents on Rugs: Consistent potty routines and immediate cleanups with enzyme cleaner prevent repeat offenses. Pro tip: Keep enzyme cleaners in easy-to-reach places for quick action. The secret: Dab with a rag or paper towel as soon as possible to get as much of the urine out before using the enzyme cleaner.
  • Getting into Food: When their food temptations lead to trouble, a crate or baby gates offer a safe space.

Sippi is such a lap dog; he’s very resistant to being alone in his crate. We made the mistake of catering to his whining about it. In hindsight, we realized our error and would double down on this rule with another dog.

We tried keeping food out of his reach, but Sippi’s been to the dog ER three times after eating chocolate. It was so scary and so sad to see him that sick. Do everything you can to prevent this from happening to your pet!

Because it’s almost impossible to avoid all incidents, keep the vet and emergency vet numbers handy. With dogs and kids around, accidents are likely.

  • General Mischief: Positive reinforcement training encourages good behavior. And in those rare moments of mischief, consistency and patience are key. We use treats and lots of praise to reinforce good habits.

Quick Tips

  • Use a crate or playpen for safe play.
  • Rotate chew toys to keep them interesting.
  • Establish a consistent potty routine.
  • Keep enzyme cleaner handy for quick accident cleanups.
  • Teach “leave it” to manage food-related mishaps.
  • Keep vet and emergency vet numbers accessible.

At Langston Living, dogs like Sippi are more than just pets—they’re family. Their charm teaches us love, loyalty, and playfulness. Together, we navigate family life, finding happiness in every wag and paw-printed memory.
