Valentine’s season isn’t just about romance—it’s the perfect excuse to gather your favorite people, and if you’re part of a Mahjong group, you’ve hit the jackpot. Hosting a Galentine’s Mahjong night is a two-for-one deal: you don’t have to worry about who to invite, you already have a built-in activity, and the vibe is guaranteed to be lively and fun. No awkward small talk—just good friends, good snacks, and a whole lot of laughter.
I’m sharing photos and tips straight from the Beautiful Table Setting event in Mississippi, where I gave a presentation on creating memorable tablescapes. This Galentine’s table was all about mixing bold patterns, romantic accents, and playful touches to create a look that was both fun and sophisticated. If you want to see more of my tables from the Beautiful Table Setting event, check out my full blog post on the event here.
Here’s how you can set up your event with two versatile options depending on the style of your gathering.
Full Table Setting (For a Seated Lunch or Dinner)

Start with a foundation and build layers of texture and color, finishing with refined accents and playful details. Here’s what you can do and how I did it:
- Foundation: Start with a bold or patterned tablecloth to set the tone. (I used a red and white striped tablecloth.)
- Layers: Add placemats and plates that complement the tablecloth. Look for textures or patterns that bring depth to the table. (I used round floral placemats or pink and white linen placemats paired with red and white bamboo plates.)
- Accents: Incorporate soft details like napkins and napkin rings. (I used red and pink ikat dinner napkins with clear napkin rings holding a single flower for a romantic touch.)
- Centerpiece: Create a focal point with branches, flowers, or candles. (I used branches spray-painted white, with candles and bud vases scattered through the branches.)
- Refinement: Finish with elegant glassware, flatware, and personalized details. (I used silver goblets, red wine glasses, gold flatware, and playful place cards with fun names.)
Buffet Style Setup (Light Hors d’Oeuvres or Snacks)
- Stack of salad or bread plates for easy serving
- Napkins in a holder or displayed in small baskets
- Sparkling Pink Champagne Punch in a self-serve drink station
- Mini heart-shaped grilled cheese and tomato soup shooters arranged on trays
- Snack station with Cupid’s Crunch Brickle
- Fondue station for dessert, with a variety of dippers arranged neatly on serving platters

- Dessert: Decadent chocolate fondue
- Dippers: Strawberries, marshmallows, pretzels, heart-shaped brownies, and sliced bananas

This menu is inspired by my love for a good fondue night. I hosted a Friendsgiving fondue party, which would also work beautifully for Valentine’s or a Mahjong gathering. Check out the Friendsgiving fondue party blog for more inspiration on making fondue the centerpiece of your gathering.

Hosting Mahjong (Or Book Club, Bridge, Bible Study, or Investment Club!)
A Mahjong night—or any regular gathering like book club, bridge, Bible study, or even an investment club—is a fantastic way to celebrate Galentine’s because it gives the event a built-in activity while keeping things social and fun. Whether your guests are regular players or brand-new to the game, it’s easy to set up a low-pressure, lighthearted event.
If you’re hosting a Mahjong night, this menu works perfectly. Plus, incorporating a simple table rotation system will keep the energy high and make sure everyone gets to play with different people. Set a timer for 30-minute intervals, and when time’s up, players rotate to a new table. This keeps things fresh, allows guests to mix and mingle, and prevents anyone from getting stuck in a losing streak. It’s a great way to ensure the night is both social and engaging.
Final Thoughts
No matter how you’re celebrating—whether it’s a full sit-down Galentine’s dinner, a casual Mahjong night with snacks, or a mix of both—the most important thing is enjoying the moment with good company. It doesn’t take a picture-perfect setup to make a party special, just a few personal touches, a great menu, and a cocktail, of course. I hope this week’s ideas give you the inspiration you need to host something fabulous.
